Plateprat med Lindsay Scarey

Musikkbibliotekar Olav Nilsen slår av en prat med Lindsay Scarey.

Describe yourself in at least five words:
My boyfriend once wrote a song lyric, "my girl is warmer than a french fry" and that's my favorite way I've ever been described

If you were to choose a pseudonym/artist name
I don't need one. Everyone always assumes my real name is a stage name

If you want to get people out on the dance floor, what song do you play?
Twist and Shout by the Beatles,

or Shake it Up by The Cars. Both guaranteed to get the room moving in my experience.

What is your relationship with the library?
I love it! I check out physical books and audiobooks from my library, and I love buying used books from library sales.

Five favorite albums
Off The Bone by The Cramps

The Good Son by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds

Lust for Life by Iggy Pop

Apocalypse Dudes by Turbonegro

Three Imaginary Boys by The Cure

Five favorite songs
These change all the time, but lately I've been very into:

"It's Your Vooddoo Working" by Charles Sheffield

"Hop the Twig" by The Courettes

"Hate The Police" by The Dicks

"Flesh and Blood" by Messer Chups

"I'm Alive" by Johnny Thunder

What have you been listening to the last few days:
The Ravagers just released a new record, On the Loose on April 5 that's really great!

A classic that you never understood?
The Grateful Dead. I grew up with Deadhead parents, so it's not lack of exposure - I just don't get it!

Do you collect records? Why?
Yes, I have a modest record collection. A few reasons - first, I like to buy new releases from bands I like because I know how much of a difference that makes as opposed to streaming only. I also like the experience of flipping through my records and putting one on to listen to - it's much more intentional that just throwing on a playlist on a streaming platform. Finally, I DJ so I am always on the lookout for garage, psych, and punk 45s

Favorite Physical record store:
Singles Going Steady in Seattle, WA USA, Easy Street Records in Seattle, WA USA, Born Bad Records in Paris, France, and 72 Records in Brussels, Belgium

Last purchased Record:
I bought a few 45s on Sunday at Easy Street Records in Seattle. They have a great selection of used 45s for fair prices so it's a great place to browse. I got the Touch Me I'm Sick/Sweet Young Thing Ain't Sweet No More single from Mudhoney, just rereleased on Subpop.

I also picked up singles from Ernie K-Doe, The Majors, Gladys Knight and The Pips, Gloria Gaynor, and Jean Knight

Three records that are at the top of your want list?

I'd love to get a hold of Down the Subway/Love Ladder by Jack Hammer

I Put a Spell on You/Little Demon by Screamin' Jay Hawkins

And a newer record: Point Blank/Mr Dynamite by Killer Kin

Vinyl, CD, Cassette or streaming. What do you prefer?
I'm a vinyl girl, but I do stream also. You can't take a record player with you on the bus.

Are you a sound freak/audiophile? Not really

What do you play music on at home?
I'm a real hipster - I've got a record player from the 70s

A Mixtape/Spotify playlist to celebrate love, what three songs must be included?

Fall to Pieces by The Cute Lepers, All This and More by The Dead Boys,

Favorite Thing by The Replacements

What concert experience will you never forget?
Seeing Bauhaus. I cried when they played Dark Entries.

Where would you like to travel to experience music
Mexico City! There are so many amazing bands from there, I want to experience the city and the scenes that are producing such killer music!

Dream job now and when you were 13?
At 13 and now, my dream job is being a bass player. So I've got that sorted!

How do you think your friends perceive your taste in music?
All my friends know I'm cool. That's why we're friends

How old were you when you "discovered" music and what made you get hooked?
When I was 13, I was over at my friend Christian's house and he put on "CD Version of the First Two Records" by Bikini Kill - it was the first time I had been exposed to music that wasn't from my parents' generation, and wasn't being played on mainstream radio. I fell in love with punk music at that moment and it's shaped my whole life since!

Has your taste in music changed?
Not especially. I've discovered more and more things that I like over the years, but I still love all the music I loved when I was young.

A musical decade you would travel to if you had a time machine?
The 60s!

Is there anything you would like to learn?
All kinds of things. I'm curious about just about everything. Specifically, I'm trying to learn French right now, and I would like to become better at guitar

Are you vain? Yes

A tattoo you want to show off
I have lots of tattoos. Come to a Darts show and see for yourself.

What excites you?
Playing music for people having a great time - either playing live or DJing - or being a part of the audience and getting to dance to records or enjoy a band playing live.

Do you swear? Do you have a power statement you want to share?
I do tend to swear a lot in casual conversation. I say Fuck a lot. I'm not that creative.

Favorite vehicle/means of transportation?
I don't have a car so I take the train and the bus a lot. I've been known to carry my bass, cables, amp, and cabinet on the bus to gigs across town.

Something you regret?
Not showing up for the internship I talked my way into at Kill Rock Stars Records when I was a teenager. They were going to let me work there and I just didn't show up! What an idiot! Sorry Kill Rock Stars!

Most beautiful song for a funeral?
Never Let Go by Tom Waits
